New Year's Evolutions
The masters of science who think about these kinds of things have oft stated that one of the biggest differences between humans and animals - besides the fact that animals don't use credit cards - is that humans have this bothersome trait of "caring what other members of the community think about them." I like to say and think and act as if I am apart from this, as I think each and every one of us does. But the truth is that in some measurable way there's always somebody's opinion we do, indeed, care about. Even if we say we don't. Like for example a cherished older relative, or a spouse, or someone we knew from high school we re-meet somewhere down the road. The plain fact is that, despite all our ubercool protestations to the contrary yes, Virginia, we actually do give a shit what other people think. It's what differentiates us from the baser, natural animals in the chain. Anyway so far as we can tell.
The advanced view of this, however, is that we like to think that the people whose opinions we value are somehow hand-picked through our personal and therefore rarefied filters. As in; yes I do care what some people think, but I decide who those people are so it's alright because I only pick cool people whose opinions I care about. The problem is that deep down inside we all know this is also bullshit. Total self-justifying and complete bovine scatology. We don't want the guy in the next car to think we're odd so we stop singing when he pulls up to the light beside us. Or we cut the grass because we don't want the neighbors to think we're a bunch of slobs living here. Or we hide the liquor bottles in a hole in the wall because... oh wait, nevermind about that one. Oh hahahahaha. Nothing.
What?
I guess it all depends on what constitutes "other people" when we say we don't care what they think. That has a terrific potential to be a comfortable justification a little bit don't you agree? OK we're actually on kind of questionable ground and it isn't exactly how we'd like it all to go down or something but - know what? - I don't care what people think.
Yeah right. Sure you don't.
So this is a round about way of saying my New Year's resolution is going to be "Try to be less full of shit." I think that has a lot of potential. Don't you agree?
Haha. I'm asking but I actually don't care what you think. Well maybe a little. Of course if I didn't care what you think I wouldn't edit the misspellings from this post. So there I am being full of shit again.
Man I really gotta work on this.

Hahahaha!
I definitely enjoyed reading this. :)
But you're right. I mean, overall, I really don't care what people think, but that's mostly because their perceptions are based on their own shit they're bringing to the table, and I have no control over that, so therefore - I don't care.
But sometimes i want to post some freaking status on FB, and I don't, because I know some people will think it's for them, or someone else will read too much into it, or whatever, so I don't post it.
By the way - I keep on singing when someone pulls up next to me at the light. I figure, if it makes them laugh, I've done my good deed for the day.
Happy New Year, RW!!!!
xoxo
partly wrong on the premise: animals do care what other members of their community think about them.
and for similar reasoning toward the endgame.
I've always cared what people think. What's wrong with that? The thing is, I try not to change myself just because I care. Seems to me all of the rampant "I don't care" crap is part of the problem, like it's cool to be closed off.
sybil- Once on FB I posted a string of sayings that were twists on compliments gone sour like "I will always cherish my initial misconceptions about you." They were pretty funny and not directed to anyone or specifically placed on anybody's wall. Two people unfriended me. HA!
gino - I don't see that data. The only folks who have put that kind of advanced thought [process into the rudimentary brains of animals is PETA. I suddenly think the world is about to end...
steph- I agree. The sickness is that being detached is cool. Silly rabbits. Everybody knows being connected but acting detached is what's cool. :-)
Ya know, I caught the picture of today's post on BE Earl's blog and I became curious.
I am whole heartedly pleased with myself for coming over here.
I think it was Brilliant.
But I guess you really don't care what I think..
seriously, rw.
what do you think all those scent markings/tree scratchings are all about.
all geared towards saying the same thing: i'm cool.
peta makes it loonism shown by ascribing human emotions and thought proceses to every kind of animal, when even every kind of animal is wired differently from the other kinds.
sorry, let me get back on topic...
what were you saying again?
oh yeah.
hey, i'm cool, and i dont really care what you think me either, even if i am faking it, or not.
I've seen a dog embarrassed once or twice. Maybe after he had his balls clipped and he was wearing one of those retarded collars. The cone of shame, I guess.
I just couldn't tell if he cared what other dogs thought of him in that moment or if he cared what we humans thought of him. Or maybe he was just feeling less like a dude once his dudeness was taken away.
I'm gonna try to be less full of shit this year as well, but alas I will probably need hourly flushings. Ewww.
Candy's - well glad you came over. i'll check you out in a bit. But of COURSE I care since you think it's Brilliant. If you didn't like it I'd huff off and shrug. Come to think of it that also proves my argument. See? You're a genius.
gino - pretty sure marking territory is more "the food and potential mates in this section are mine" rather than "oh God I hope he comes over here and signs my yearbook."
earl - plus that could be anthropomorphism too. But in any case there is more than one way to rid oneself of effluvium.
But being full of shit is all I've got! What am I supposed to do with THAT? :-)
Happiest of new years to you and Mrs. RW.
don't worry dave, it's my resolution, not yours. You don't need that. 'Course Monkey, now that's maybe another thing but hey - I'm trying not to be too judgmental.
We wish you the same, of course, and did miss you not coming to Chicago this year.
I'm charmed when other people, often accidentally, let me know that they care about what I think about them. It doesn't seem right (right?), that they should care, but I suppose that's just another trait to encourage the survival of the species. And I'm down for anything that doesn't end in total annihilation. And some stuff that does.
